EDI in Government

Monday, June 25, 2012, 8:00 AM
EDI in government work, such as healthcare, is incredibly reliant on paper. There are a lot of government agencies that use hundreds of thousands of different forms for purchasing, transportation, and quotes. As the debt has ballooned over the last several decades, there has been a stern effort to create ways to reduce expenses and cut business procedures. EDI is the best solution for government, and it is because they can eliminate paper, and they will be able to speed up processing of business transactions. The whole entire U.S. government was not a big-time EDI user at first, but they have been integrating EDI into their various agencies for awhile now. There are a lot of government agencies, like the Department of Defense, that use EDI capability as a way to select different vendors. The IRS uses EDI for tax return filing, currently, and the U.S. Navy is in the process of using EDI to help purchase orders and bills of lading. EDI customs documents are also gaining a lot of popularity, and there are governments around the world that are searching for means of making their trade with different countries easier and less expensive. Those in waste management and environmental clean-up have always tried to comply with government. Efforts are currently being undergone to standardize reporting to make sure EDI is a lot easier to use for companies so they can comply with government requirements and perform reporting with the necessary time frames, and EDI is becoming more and more popular.
