Trials with EDI transmission

Wednesday, May 2, 2012, 8:00 AM
For a period of four months, trials of EDI reception and transmissions were done on three participants. This experiment was a study carried out where weekly project meetings were held with financial, marketing and data processing personnel of every participating company. Towards completion of the experiment, the project team, pilot participants and service providers met on a round table where a forum for elaboration of respective experiences during the study was provided. Through the context of pilot rating, EDI professionals have come up with a document containing the general difficulties that exist. Here, it was all about exploring and researching on the project at the expense of saving money. It was difficult to quantify hard benefits since four months were not enough to deal with such enormous information hence such problems were just compounded to make our research easier. During the research, we also had trouble where if problems were to arise during the installation and testing stage, we had the onus to maintain the parallel running of the paper system to ensure a continuous smooth pattern of trade between the three participants. Nevertheless, all the participants agreed regarding the following: One is customer service benefits. According to Beta, in a low margin business, EDI could avail the best panacea to the problem of bettering customer service .This is because it is not only efficient but also cheap compared to other modes of service provision. Cheap in the manner that no more costs shall be incurred once EDI is installed within their internal systems. This amounted to an anticipation of a two day saving by each participant. According to Alpha, the pilot project provided pointers on how communication between sites could be rationalized to reach the head offices within a very short time spell. It was anticipated that it could take three or four days less from normal days for Alpha to supply to Sigma. Cost savings. Both Sigma (the multiple chain) and Beta (the FMCG distributor) had it that the double needs of drawing out a relevant product line set from the price list order form (PLOF) and the identification of products on special promotion terms had affected the ultimate implementation of EDI in their companies. By consequent, they indicated that with the installation of the EDI, a significant improved management value –added productivity could be realized. This is a post which tries to give an overview of the experiments carried out in the quest to find out on EDI transmission. In the research, three companies using EDI were made a case study whereby after four weeks the personnel of each company gave a testimony touching on the EDI costs and EDIs beneficial to customers.
